For years I've been using gasifier camping wood stoves that I've made myself from tin cans/bits of old chimney flue etc. They work very well, but don't pack down small and tend to end up rusting. Recently, I told a friend about the principle of gasifier camping wood stoves, and said I'd send him details of both how to make one and ones you can buy. On researching the various ones available commercially, I was intrigued to see the Bestargot model, which, from the few reviews I could find, appeared to be very efficient and a really good size. And of course made of stainless stell, so likely to last a long time. And it's cheap (yeah I know it's probably made in China, but then what isn't nowadays?) So I decided to buy it and try it for myself.
Most gasifier stoves are tiny (not the ones I make though), and are fine for backpacking, but not for much else. Considering that I use my gasifier stove for cooking my lunch most days in the orchard/pasture where I spend a lot of my time, and that this is a lifestyle choice (off-grid, no wish to buy bottled gas), I need something a bit more substantial.
To boil water for tea and coffee, I use a Kelly Kettle, which is unbeatable for efficiency, but for cooking, this wood stove has proven to be as efficient, if not more so, than my DIY version. The capacity is even larger, the pan support is adequately stable, and the pot skirt is high enough not to permit it to smoke too much. Like any gasifier stove, you need to get used to feeding it - not too little and not too much fuel at a time, also you have to ensure that you keep an eye on it, so it doesn't end up burning up too fast. But having a good capacity, this one can take quite substantial sized pieces of wood, which helps to keep it going for longer. Another thing that is common to all camping wood stoves, gasifier or not, is that they blacken the pots and pans. Too bad - you just have to keep a set of them destined to be used only on your wood stoves.
I've always taken my wood stove with me whenever I go away camping, even if it's a trip sleeping in the car. Now that I have this one, I know that I can pack it away small and keep it cleanly in its bag.
This is a great stove for a very reasonable price, especially for someone who needs one with good capacity.
